But have you considered resting
Hit and Miss #461
It’ll be the first bit of vacation in a while, especially just being at home, and it’s sorely needed. We’ll see how I did in next week’s issue :)
Hoo boy, did he ever manage to foreshadow the week without any knowledge of what was to come! Longstanding, built-up stress (one wonders, burnout?) meant I crashed out pretty hard by mid-week, and had to accept (with the loving advice of T, friends, and family) that I couldn’t expect of myself the hopes I had for the week.
Catharsis came in all forms, from bursting out in deep, body-wrenching sobs at the first song in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (the superior Mamma Mia! film) to joy and elation during a few well-timed outings with friends new and old alike.1 I certainly prefer one of those forms, but even the lows have a valuable quality.
There’s, hopefully, a foreseeable end to these busier times, and the busy-ness is partly due to some really excellent things on the horizon. But my goodness, it’s a lot for now.
It was a successful time off in that I kept thinking “ah, I’m off today but not working tomorrow, must be Saturday today, I’ll have to write my newsletter tomorrow”, and then that day would arrive and the cycle would repeat anon. But Sunday’s now here, for real!
Just a few links this week, because, well, see above.
- “Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front” by Wendell Berry (via Austin Kleon)
- “Oceans and Galaxies and Lifetimes: What does it mean to me to be Filipino?” by Angelo Gio Mateo
- “Why do we salute with 21 guns?” by Ainsley Hawthorn (multiple people sent this to me, and I appreciate you all for it)
- “A History of Menus is a Menu of History” by The Pudding (through which you can explore 5,000 restaurant menus from 1880 through 1920)
- “I Bought a House and Became Part of the Problem” by David Moscrop
- Two excellent conversations: Maria Popova with Debbie Millman and Michael Pollan with Krista Tippett
PatLittle/oic-databy Patrick Little is a fork of a scraper I built years ago, which stopped running two years back—I went to go fix it this week, only to see that Patrick had already done so, and has kept it running all this time; I love open source!
All the best for the week ahead! (Here’s hoping 😅)
