What a lovely community
Hit and Miss #455
Folks, it is 3pm and I am wiped. Not nearly as wiped as T, though, who ran yet another marathon today. Legend. Truth is, though, we’ve been run a bit ragged these past few months, despite our best efforts. With the big athletic day out of the way, looking forward to some chiller exertion in the months ahead.
Last year, I summed up my feelings on this weekend and its sense of community better than I can this year. But this year, we had even more friends participating in race weekend: T, yes, but also D, G, M, C, E, and no doubt several other initials I’m forgetting. 25% alphabet coverage is excellent, though.
Here’s to those who ran, those who cheered, and those who made it all happen. What a lovely community.
- A tour through the Apple Lisa’s interface copy. The “while you wait” language for the printer windows is brilliant, but I also find interesting the idea of getting to choose how intensely your computer worked on a task. We don’t have great parallels for that now, as computing power grows ever more, but I wonder if we should, if only for how it’d make us reflect on how much effort our computer’s doing for us. (Tangentially related, the idea of “choosing slower shipping” in favour of workers’ rights.)
- Why is it difficult to visualize sports metrics for a given game? Loads of variables, unrelated scales, and only two teams.
- Craig Mod eloquently captures his recent days in “New York, the beautiful mess”.
- So not only is electrification on the up-and-up, but we’re making energy-intensive technologies like desalination ever more efficient. Some days it feels like the future is closer than others.
All the best for the week ahead!
