Hit and Miss #426

Welcome November! This month brings shorter days, longer nights—and, for some, an impending sense of doom. For me, it also brings happy memories of the first few weeks meeting and spending time with T, and gratitude for her upending the need for my “November survival guides”. I was sad for a few days about the shorter days, but it now feels right—as T put it today, definitely feeling ready to hibernate after a chaotic, difficult summer.

While out for a hike today, we saw several blue jays darting through the forest—blissfully unaware, I assume, of the baseball team’s fortunes. It’s been a delight seeing people come together around this team and their story (it’s an epic one, as Angelo captures well).

T and I stayed up last night “watching” the text ticker play-by-play on Apple Sports—the structure and rhythm of baseball works so well in that format (perhaps also why it’s so well suited to radio). A heartbreaking ending to the arc, but what an arc—sport at its best.

B mentioned today that I should share some baseball trivia. I’ve not got any, but we did enjoy scrolling Wikipedia’s glossary of baseball terms between innings.

Three lighter ones to close:

  • The Minecraft Halloween update came out fifteen years ago, marking about fifteen years since I bought Minecraft (though I’d been playing the free versions for a bit longer). Been a while now since I opened it, but many fond memories of hours in those worlds, alone and with many, many friends. Impressive to note what the game was back then, and how much it’s changed since.
  • Ourse is a new furniture company with some beautiful work, including from friend of the show Jake Oliveira.
  • Speaking of beautiful work, I’d be remiss not to share David Fisher’s latest trio of shrink pots. In my notes for today, I just wrote “BEAUTY POTS”—so true.

All the best for the week ahead!
